Forklift Load Center, Explained Properly

Load center is the most important number on a forklift that almost nobody can define. Get it wrong and the capacity rating you are relying on does not apply to the load you are lifting.

What load center actually measures

Load center is the horizontal distance from the vertical face of the forks to the center of gravity of the load. It is not the length of the pallet, and it is not where the load looks heaviest.

For a uniformly loaded 48-inch pallet, the center of gravity sits at the middle, 24 inches from the fork face. That is why 24 inches became the standard rating point for most trucks in North America.

Why it changes capacity so sharply

A forklift is a lever. The front axle is the fulcrum, the load sits on one side and the counterweight on the other. Moving the load further forward increases the moment it exerts, and the counterweight does not change.

That is why a modest increase in load center produces a disproportionate drop in safe capacity. It is physics rather than a manufacturer being conservative, and exceeding it is how trucks tip forward.

The load capacity calculator shows the effect for a given load center so you can see how steep the curve is.

Calculating it for a real load

For a uniform load, it is half the depth. A 48-inch deep pallet loaded evenly has a 24-inch load center; a 60-inch load evenly packed has 30 inches.

For an uneven load, the center of gravity is wherever the mass concentrates. A pallet with heavy product at the front and light packaging behind has a load center well short of the geometric middle, which is favourable. The reverse is dangerous and less obvious.

When in doubt, treat the load center as further forward than you think. The error that matters is underestimating it.

Reading the data plate correctly

The data plate lists capacity at a stated load center and lift height. If your load center exceeds the rated figure, the plate capacity does not apply and you need the derated value from the manufacturer.

On trucks with attachments, the plate should reflect the fitted configuration. A plate that has not been updated after an attachment was fitted is a compliance problem as well as a safety one.

What this means when buying

If you handle anything other than standard pallets, tell the supplier your actual load dimensions and weight distribution rather than just the weight. A truck sized on weight alone may be wrong for your loads.

Long loads, drums, coils and anything handled with a clamp all shift the load center in ways that change the capacity you need. Specify those cases up front.

When you know your real numbers, send them over and we will size it properly rather than quoting the headline capacity.

Frequently asked

What is a 24 inch load center?

It means the capacity rating assumes the center of gravity of the load sits 24 inches forward of the fork face, which matches a uniformly loaded 48-inch pallet. It is the standard rating point for most North American trucks.

How do I calculate load center?

For a uniform load it is half the depth: a 48-inch pallet has a 24-inch load center. For an uneven load it is wherever the mass concentrates, which may be well forward of the geometric middle.

What happens if load center exceeds the rating?

Usable capacity drops, sometimes sharply, because the load exerts a greater moment about the front axle. The data plate figure no longer applies and you need the manufacturer derated value.

Does load center matter more at height?

Yes. The effects compound, because stability also decreases as the load rises. A load center and height combination outside the rating is how trucks tip forward.

General guidance only. Always work from the service manual for your specific make and model, and follow the manufacturer intervals and procedures. Anything affecting load handling or operator safety should be assessed by a qualified technician.
