When to Replace Forklift Tires

Forklift tires wear slowly enough that nobody notices until something else goes wrong. They affect stability, load capacity and operator fatigue, and the wear markers are easy to read once you know where to look.

Read the wear line, not the appearance

Most cushion tires carry a moulded wear line, sometimes called the safety line or the 50 percent line. When the tire has worn to that marker it is finished, regardless of how much rubber appears to remain.

Tires worn past that point change the geometry of the truck. The mast sits lower, the load centre shifts, and rated capacity is no longer what the data plate says. That is not a theoretical concern on a machine working near its limits.

The symptoms that tell you before you look

Increased vibration transmitted to the operator is usually the first sign, and it compounds across a shift into real fatigue. Chunking, where pieces tear from the tread, indicates the tire is past its useful life and failing structurally.

Flat spots from repeated hard braking, visible cord or fabric, and separation between the rubber and the band are all terminal conditions. Any of them means removal now rather than scheduling.

Cushion and pneumatic wear differently

Cushion tires are solid rubber pressed onto a steel band, used almost entirely indoors on smooth surfaces. They wear by abrasion and their failure modes are chunking, flat-spotting and separation from the band.

Pneumatic tires, whether air-filled or solid, are used outdoors and on rough ground. Air-filled versions puncture; solid pneumatics do not but transmit more shock. Tread depth matters on pneumatics in a way it does not on cushion tires, because traction on loose or wet surfaces depends on it.

Choosing the wrong type for the surface is a common and expensive mistake. Our cushion tire and pneumatic tire pages cover the selection question in detail.

What replacement involves

Cushion tires are pressed on and off with specialised equipment, which is why this is not usually a DIY job. Many operations have tires pressed by a mobile service that comes to the site, which avoids the downtime of transporting the machine.

Replace in pairs at minimum, and consider all four together if wear is comparable. Mismatched tire heights affect level and stability, which defeats the purpose of replacing them at all.

The cost of running them too long

Worn tires increase vibration, which accelerates wear on bearings, mast components and the operator. They reduce effective capacity. They increase stopping distance on smooth floors. And a tire that fails structurally during a lift creates a genuine hazard.

Against that, tires are among the cheaper consumables on a forklift. Running them past the wear line to save money reliably costs more elsewhere.

When tires are the least of it

If a machine needs tires, and the hydraulics seep, and the hour meter is high, the tire question is really a question about the machine. Four tires on a tired truck is money spent on an asset already near the end of its economic life.

Check what the machine is worth against what the queue of deferred work costs on our value pages. If it has turned, we buy equipment in any condition.

Frequently asked

How do I know when forklift tires need replacing?

Most cushion tires have a moulded wear line. When the tire has worn to that marker it is finished. Chunking, flat spots, visible cord and separation from the band are all terminal conditions requiring immediate removal.

Do worn forklift tires affect load capacity?

Yes. Worn tires lower the truck and shift the load centre, which means rated capacity on the data plate no longer applies. On machines working near their limits this matters materially.

Should I replace all four forklift tires at once?

Replace in pairs at minimum. Mismatched tire heights affect level and stability. If wear is comparable across all four, replacing together is usually the better decision.

What is the difference between cushion and pneumatic forklift tires?

Cushion tires are solid rubber on a steel band for smooth indoor surfaces. Pneumatic tires, air-filled or solid, handle rough outdoor ground and depend on tread depth for traction. Using the wrong type for your surface wears them out quickly.

General guidance only. Always work from the service manual for your specific make and model, and follow the manufacturer intervals and procedures. Anything affecting load handling or operator safety should be assessed by a qualified technician.
