What Is My Forklift Worth?

Hours and condition move a forklift's price far more than the badge does. Put in what you have and this gives you the range a realistic buyer or dealer is working from - then go get the actual number.

Estimated value range

—

This is an estimate built from 2026 market ranges, not an appraisal. Hours, maintenance paper and local demand move real prices, and a machine is only worth what someone will pay for it this month.

    What actually drives the number

Hours, before anything else. An LPG or diesel truck is generally reckoned economically finished somewhere past 12,000–15,000 hours; an electric runs closer to 15,000–20,000 because the motor outlives the battery. Against that, age is almost a footnote. A single-shift operation puts roughly 1,000 hours a year on a machine, so a seven-year-old truck showing 4,000 hours has been easy on itself and a seven-year-old showing 14,000 has not.

Then paperwork. A documented service history is worth real money because it converts a gamble into a known quantity. The same truck with records and without them are two different prices, and the gap is wider than most sellers expect.

The badge matters least. Toyota carries a modest premium and the budget imports sit a little under the majors, but parts availability on an older machine matters more than brand prestige. Nobody pays up for a name attached to a worn-out truck.

If it is electric, start with the battery

A tired lead-acid pack is a hidden $3,000–$6,000 line item — on a $14,000 truck that is most of the negotiation, not a detail. Ask how old the pack is, whether it was watered on schedule, and what it tests at under load. Two electrics at the same hour reading can be thousands apart on the strength of the battery alone, which is exactly why the calculator above asks.

    Buying, selling, or trading in?

Selling privately generally beats a trade-in, because a dealer taking your machine is buying reconditioning risk and carrying cost and will price that in. Trading in buys you speed and no tyre-kickers. The only way to know what the convenience is costing you is to get both numbers before you commit — and that is free to do.

If you are buying, run the range above against the model-by-model value pages, then take the 12-point inspection checklist to the viewing and price every finding into your offer. If the machine is a repair-or-replace decision rather than a purchase, what repairs actually cost is the better starting point.

    Common questions

What is my used forklift worth?

A complete, running forklift is worth roughly 25-70% of its new price depending on age, hours and condition - and hours matter more than the badge. A 6,000 lb IC truck around six years old with 6,000 hours and maintenance records typically lands in the $13,000-$18,000 range in 2026. A 10-year-old machine past 11,000 hours with no paperwork is usually single digits. The calculator on this page gives you a range; a dealer quote gives you a number.

How many hours is too many for a forklift?

An internal combustion forklift is generally considered economically done somewhere around 12,000-15,000 hours, an electric closer to 15,000-20,000 because the motor outlasts the battery. But hours alone mislead. A 6,000-hour truck with complete service records beats a 3,500-hour mystery machine, every time. Read the pedal and seat wear against the meter - if they disagree, the meter is lying.

Does the brand change what a forklift is worth?

Less than people expect. Toyota holds a modest premium and the budget imports sit a little below the majors, but hours, condition and maintenance paper move the price far more than the name on the counterweight. Parts availability matters more than badge prestige on an older machine.

How much does a forklift battery affect value?

On an electric, enormously. A tired lead-acid pack is a hidden $3,000-$6,000 line item, which on a $14,000 truck is most of the negotiation. Always ask the battery age, whether it has been watered on schedule, and what it tests at under load. An electric with a new pack and an electric with a dying one are different machines at the same hour reading.

Is a trade-in worth less than a private sale?

Usually yes. A dealer taking your machine on trade is buying reconditioning risk and carrying cost, so expect below the private-sale range in exchange for not having to find a buyer. The way to know what you are leaving on the table is to get both numbers before you decide.

An estimate is a starting point. Tell us the make, model, hours and condition and we will put it in front of dealers who buy used inventory, so you find out what it is really worth from people writing cheques rather than from a calculator.
